Let me tell you, this is no easy question to answer. Ben and I did three, long rectangular tables which was nice in that I could easily talk to the six people close to me at my table and the three people immediately behind me. However there was still this canyon between myself and, say, where you and Joel sat. With round and square tables you have to make sure there is enough space to actually scoot the chairs out and still walk between tables. Ugh! I swear, there is no reception long enough to actually enjoy all the guests who attend.
On the other hand, just aesthetically speaking, I have to remind you of a Greenbriar wedding we did. The tables were round and by sheer accident the recessed lights cast a spotlight right on the center of several tables making your (our?) wonderful arrangements just glow. That was gorgeous! You mentioned that day an entire industry built around lighting special events and I've been intrigued with the role of lighting ever since.
Whew! That was a lot of opinion for one comment!

I'm all about the rectangular. Check out this link below. It's one long table in the middle of a barn and I looove it!

Round for me! I wanted to do a U-Shape of rectangular tables but the only space big enough for the dinner is NOT round it is.

I wish the barn we're doing the reception in was big enough to do one long table!!!!!!

A girl can dream.

I know I would rather sit at a round, but they all look pretty to me.
